The city of Cusco is known for being the starting point to visit the incredible lost city of the Incas Machu Picchu and for being the ancient capital of the Inca empire.
It is considered by many to be the most spectacular urban creation of the Inca Empire and one of the most important heritage sites in the world. It sits on top of a mountain, 8,000 feet (2,430 meters) in the tropical forest, offering spectacular scenery with significant endemic biodiversity of flora and fauna
Cusco and Machu Picchu are located in the same region (Cusco region) and are like two sides of the same coin.
To get to Machu Picchu you first have to arrive to the city of Cusco.
The city was the capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th century until the 16th-century Spanish conquest. In 1983, Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO with the title “City of Cuzco”
The name Cusco (Also called Cuzco) in the Quechua language means, “The navel of the world”.
If you want to visit Machu Picchu by Train and you are not into hiking and camping or you don’t have as much time to spend several days in the mountains, then you can visit Machu Picchu by train from Cusco city or Ollantaytambo town.
You can travel in a full-day tour (From Cusco City), also taking an overnight excursion, and even combined with the Sacred Valley Full day Tour.
The time of Travel by train will depend on where you will board to your train:
From San Pedro train station, it will take around 4 hours and 40 minutes to arrive at Machu Picchu Pueblo.
From Poroy Train station, it will take around 3 hours and 40 minutes to arrive at Machu Picchu Pueblo.
From Ollantaytambo Train Station (Sacred Valley), it will take around 1 hour and 30 minutes to arrive at Machu Picchu Pueblo.
You can travel from Lima to Cusco by plane or by bus.
A flight from Lima to the city of Cusco takes approximately 1 hour 10′.
A bus trip from Lima to the city of Cusco takes about 20 hours.
